The decline of many wildlife populations is not primarily caused by natural predators, but by habitat loss and degradation. Effective conservation is not only about protecting species themselves, but also about preserving their habitats, food sources, and breeding environments.
Nuvoton has actively participated in the the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry Agriculture project focused on natural carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation, titled “Butterfly Revival – Protecting the Habitat of the Great Purple Emperor.” This collaborative project involves Nuvoton, the Butterfly Conservation Society of Taiwan, Yunlin University of Science and Technology, and the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture. We are conducting comprehensive natural environment surveys and monitoring the hackberry tree ecosystem, which serves as the exclusive food source for the Great Purple Emperor Butterfly, within the R'uzyan Tribe of Wufeng Township, Hsinchu County. This includes establishing a visual monitoring framework that depicts the specific growth periods of the hackberry tree and creating a detailed distribution map. Moreover, we are assessing the distribution and growth conditions of beech trees to ensure a stable food source and habitat for the butterflies, thus achieving significant restoration outcomes. In 2025, Nuvoton, in conjunction with its partners, executed drone-based habitat surveys at designated hackberry tree locations in the R'uzyan Tribe. A GIS system recorded a total of 80 survey points; ground investigations confirmed 20 hackberry tree sites, while aerial imagery identified 60 potential beech tree locations. The findings from these surveys will serve as a foundational basis for subsequent habitat management strategies.
